Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises a mixture of atactic polypropylene and a resin modifier consisting of an ethylene/propylene copolymer having at least 10% propylene and a Mooney viscosity of 10-75, and/or a resin of molecular weight at least 200 and softening point not lower than 25 DEG C. consisting an ester of a hydrogenated rosin, an alkylate of phenolic resin, the reaction product of magnesium oxide with an alkylated phenolic resin, a condensate of epichlorohydrin and bisphenol A, a chlorinated polyphenyl resin, an epoxidized polybutadiene resin containing ethylenic unsaturation, a conmarone-indene resin or a terpene-phenolic resin. The mixture may be dissolved in an organic solvent or may be in the form of an aqueous emulsion e.g. using oleic acid and morpholine as emulsifier and may contain 1-400% copolymer and 1-400% resin, the total solids being 5-50%. The resin may be the glyceryl ester of hydrogenated rosin or a condensate of formaldehyde and p-tert.-butyl phenol. The mixture may be cross-linked on heating with benzoyl or dicumyl peroxide.ALSO:A substrate, e.g. paper, cloth, paperboard, metal sheets and foils, fibre glass, foamed plastic, rubber, wood, plastic films or sheets, a coated with the dried residue of an organic solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of a mixture of atactic polypropylene and a resin modifier. The resin modifier comprises an ethylene/propylene copolymer having at least 10% propylene and a Mooney viscosity of 10-75 and/or a resin of molecular weight at least 200 and softening point not lower than 25 DEG C. In examples isotactic polypropylene polyvinyl chloride, and foamed polystyrene film and aluminium sheet are coated with the mixture.
