Abstract
Adhesive compositions comprise an organic solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of chlorinated atactic polypropylene of chlorine content 7-75%. The composition may contain 30-100% of the chlorinated polypropylene, 0-70% of an ethylene-propylene copolymer containing at least 10% of propylene and of molecular weight above 12,000 and Mooney viscosity 10-75, 0-70% of a chlorinated ethylene-propylene copolymer containing at least 10% propylene and up to 65% chlorine and of molecular weight above 12,000, and 0-200% of a solid resin of molecular weight at least 200 and a softening point not lower than 25 DEG C., e.g. the glyceryl ester of hydrogenated rosin, alkylated phenolic resins, e.g. condensates of formaldehyde and p-tert.-butyl phenol, the reaction product of magnesium oxide with alkylated phenolic resins, condensates of epichloro-hydrin and bisphenol A, chlorinated polyphenyl resins, epoxidized polybutadiene resins containing ethylenic unsaturation, coumaroneindene resins and terpene-phenolic resins. The organic solvent may be a hydrocarbon or methylene chloride. The composition may also contain talc, titanium dioxide or calcium carbonate and may also be cross-linked using 0.1-5% benzoyl or dicumyl peroxide. The emulsions may contain as emulsifier a mixture of oleic acid and morpholine.ALSO:A substrate is coated with an adhesive film comprising the dried consolidated residue of an adhesive composition comprising an organic solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of chlorinated atactic polypropylene having a chlorine content of 7-75%. The substrates may be flexible or rigid and may be fibre glass sheets, rock, wool, foamed plastics, wood particle board, asbestos mats, foamed aluminium or glass, aluminium foils, plastic films and sheets, and asbestos cloth.
