979,698. Rod couplings; shaft couplings. DOMINION MAGNESIUM Ltd. Nov. 4, 1963 [Jan. 10, 1963], No. 43508/63. Headings F2G and F2U. A drill rod coupling comprises a body 10 of magnesium alloy having screw-threaded end portions 12, these end portions having their entire surfaces anodized to have an anodic film 17 of greater hardness than that of the alloy, a sealing coating 18 being bonded to the film. A particularly suitable alloy has the composition 94% magnesium, 5.5% zinc and 0.5% zirconium. The coupling is machined from extruded alloy rod, suitably roughened, and the surface is anodized above the spark potential by a known process, which produces a brittle ceramic-like surface film 17. The film guide into the surface during use and, to maintain the film intact, it is coated by dipping it into an epoxy resin lacquer.
