Abstract

979,489. Bearings; rollers. BELIOT IRON WORKS. March 14, 1961, No. 9336/61. Headings F2A and F2U. [Also in Division D2] There are provided, at each end of a rotatable hollow roll subject to axial deflection and capable in itself of supporting a load, a support member to support that end of the roll and a shaft that extends through two axially-spaced bearings outside the end of the roll and also extends inside the roll. Each shaft is connected, inside the roll, to a member for applying force to the inner surface of roll, and at least one of the bearings is associated with an actuating device to apply force to the bearing to control deflection of the roll. As shown in Fig. 5, the roll 31 is supported at one end by a rigid connection 33 welded to the shaft 32 and the inner surface of the roll, at a point about halfway between the end and the centre of the roll. The shaft is driven by means 34 and journalled in bearings 35 and 36 and support member 37. Bearing 35 is carried in a frame 38 secured to a piston of a double-acting hydraulic or pneumatic actuator 42, bearing 36 is rigidly attached to a support, and support means 37 is secured to the inside of the roll. A similar device (not shown) is provided at the other end of the roll. The " wire " 45 of a paper-making machine passes over and is driven by the roll 31. The resulting deflection of the roll can be counter. acted by applying suitable thrusts through the actuators 42 to the shafts 32 and hence through the connections 33 to the roll 31. In other embodiments (Fig. 6, not reproduced), actuators are applied to both bearings at each end, (Fig. 11, not reproduced), a single non-rotatable shaft runs right through the roll from end to end, the ends of the roll are mounted in bearings that are independent of the shaft, and the deflection-relieving force is applied through a single bearing member 101 at the centre of the roll; and (Figs. 8-10, not reproduced), the invention is applied to a felt-roll in the drying section of a paper machine, the king roll of a calender stack, and one roll of a press roll couple. The bearings 35 and 36 and 101 and support means 37 may be self-aligning bearings of the kind shown in Fig. 7. The annular strap 50 has a spherically concave face 51 that co-operates with the spherically convex face 52 of the outer race 53. The inner race 56 extends through the outer race. Balls 55 run in raceways 54 and 57, and the ball chamber D is sealed by means 59.
