Abstract

979, 362. Textile treating apparatus, sealing means. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 9, 1963 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 35564/63. Heading D1L. A pressure sealing device adapted to permit the continuous passage of a length of elongated material from a first zone maintained at one pressure to a second zone maintained at a second pressure, comprises a hollow chamber 11 surrounding the path of the material 14 and having openings 12, 13, communicating with the two zones and being adapted to contain liquid therein; gate means within said chamber subdividing it into a plurality of regions and comprising a movable baffle 31 and a mating baffle 30 canted in the direction of movement of the material and at their proximate ends, defining an opening 33 through which the material passes; support means 35 for supporting at least said movable baffle for movement of its proximate end toward and away from the path of the material and the end of the mating baffle; closure means 37 for sealing the space between the end of the movable baffle and the hollow chamber on the side thereof remote from the path of the material; means for resiliently urging the end of the movable baffle towards the path of the material to constrict the opening; and means for introducing fluid under equal pressure to both sides of the movable baffle. The support 35 is preferably a pivotable bar passing through the side walls of the chamber 11 and spring loaded on the outside of said walls with an adjustable stop means for setting the minimum gap between the baffles. The closure means includes a block 38 secured to the hollow chamber and a shoe 39 secured to the movable baffle and the baffle may be provided with orifices 47 interconnecting the spaces adjacent each side of the movable baffle. In the particular embodiment shown a plurality of gate means are provided within the hollow chamber sub-dividing it into a plurality of regions 26, 27 and 28. Fluid may be introduced into each region through suitable valves 45 the fluid being at a higher pressure in the region nearest the zone of higher pressure than that introduced into the region nearest the zone of lower pressure.
