Abstract

A fabric, e.g. cotton fabric, is coated with a composition of a vulcanized interpolymer of ethylene and propylene with or without one or more copolymerizable compounds serving to confer unsaturation on the unvulcanized interpolymer, wherein the interpolymer contains from 40 to 75 mole per cent of ethylene. The interpolymer may contain from 0,5 to 5 mole per cent, e.g. 1,0 to 3 mole per cent, of a compound serving to confer unsaturation. The compound serving to confer unsaturation may be an open-chain or ring diolefinic compound, an acetylene, or a bridged-ring hydrocarbon with at least two double bonds, such as an endocyclic hydrocarbon containing 7-10 carbon atoms and a bridge of one or two methylene groups, examples of which are given. The molecular weight of the interpolymer may be in the range 100,000-500,000, the Mooney viscosity ML-4 at 100 DEG C. being in the range 20 to 80. The interpolymer may be extended with 0-100 parts by weight of paraffinic and/or naphthenic oils per 100 parts by weight of polymer. The composition may contain 50-300 parts by weight of fillers, examples of which are given, per 100 parts by weight of polymer. The coated fabric is prepared by applying a composition of the interpolymer, and then vulcanizing the composition. The composition may be applied by spreading as a dough formed with a suitable solvent, or blended with interpolymers of low molecular weight, in which case no solvent is necessary. More than one coating of the composition may be applied. Suitable vulcanizing agents are specified. Specification 880,904 is referred to.
