Abstract
1,204,989. Polymer compositions. SIEMENS A.G. 20 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968; 28 Feb., 1969 (4)], No. 25759/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] In a cable fitting, e.g. a joint or termination, a layer of cross-linked or vulcanized olefin copolymer is disposed between a polyolefininsulated cable and a cast resin body. The cable insulation may be cross-linked high pressure or low pressure polyethylene which is bonded to the olefin copolymer layer during the cross-linking or vulcanizing process. The process is effected by the application of heat and possibly pressure by wrapipng the layer in bandages. The layer, which may be formed from a strip, comprises two olefin components in equal molar proportions, e.g. ethylene propylene rubber, and may also contain an unsaturated hydrocarbon, e.g. a diene to form, for example ethylene propylene terpolymer rubber. Peroxides are used as cross-linking agents, and vulcanizing agents consist of sulphur and organic accelerators, e.g. mercaptobenzthiazole or tetramethylthiuramdisulphide. The cast resin body may be positioned or moulded on the layer before or after the process. The cast resin body may be epoxide resin based, epoxide resin or polyurethane resin. Polyurethane resin may be based on polyether alcohol and a diisocyanate to which an organic filler is added so that the body adheres to the olefin copolymer layer. Alternatively, the polyurethane or epoxide body may be bonded to the layer by an intermediate adhesive layer. The adhesive is (1) based on butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer mixed with a chlorinated diphenyl resin to which is added a 5-10% solution of triphenylmethane-4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> triisocyanate in a 20% methylene chloride solution; (2) long chain polyester alcohols in admixture with isocyanates, e.g. 10% of triphenyl- 4,4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP> - isocyanylnonosulphophosphate in a 20% methylene chloride solution; (3) based on ethyleneacrylic acid or cyanoacrylonitrile (for polyurethane bodies only) copolymers forming a 10-15% solution in xylene heated to 70-80‹ C. The adhesive is brushed on to the olefin copolymer layer and the solvent is evaporated. For epoxide resin bodies, adhesive (3) is applied, during the cross-linking or vulcanizing process. evaporation being effected by the process itself. Another adhesive for epoxide resin may be (4) a solution of ethylene-vinylacetate copolymers.
