Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0978853/C1/1> in which R is alkyl and R1 is either a C6-ring cycloalkyl group or a group of formula <FORM:0978853/C1/2> wherein R2 is alkyl, CR+R1 being at least 12 and R having at least 6 carbon atoms when R1 is cycloalkyl. Specifically claimed are (a) the cyclohexylphthalate esters of 2-ethylhexanol, "Oxo"-decanol, "Oxo"-tridecanol, n-tetradecanol and catalytically hydrogenated coconut oil alcohols and (b) p-phenylenedimethylene bis-(2-ethylhexyl phthalate) and the analogous esters with (instead of 2-ethylhexanol) n-butanol, "Oxo"-decanol and catalytically hydrogenated coconut oil alcohols. Type (a) esters are produced by catalytically esterifying with an alkanol a cyclohexyl acid phthalate; type (b) by heating an a ,a 1-dihalo-p-xylene with an alkyl acid phthalate and an acid acceptor, e.g. a tertiary amine.ALSO:A vinyl halide or vinylidene halide polymer composition comprises as plasticizer a compound of formula <FORM:0978853/C3/1> in which R is alkyl and R1 is either a C6-ring cycloalkyl group or a group of formula <FORM:0978853/C3/2> wherein R2 is alkyl, CR+R1 being at least 12 and R having at least 6 carbon atoms when R1 is cycloalkyl. The use of such compounds in plasticizing P.V.C. is exemplified but the said polymer may be a homo- or co-polymer of a vinyl or vinylidene halide in general; a long list of suitable comonomers is given.
