Abstract
978,692. Ornamenting car bodies. H. F. ROOT. Feb. 5, 1963, No. 4562/63. Heading B6G. In a process of ornamenting a metal car body with dry flakes of pearl-shell, the car body is first prepared after cleaning with a coating of pastel coloured epoxy resin compound. This compound may comprise a mixture of one-third of " Epoxy 815" manufactured by the Shell Chemical Co., one-third of allylglycidol ether and one-third of H-3, a hardening agent manufactured by the Shell Chemical Co. A metal car body may also be previously prepared with a coating of zinc dust immersed in fluid epoxy resin compound of the above type to inhibit rust. Pearl-shell flakes having a mesh size from 30 to 50 are adhesively attached to the previously prepared car body with a clear epoxy resin compound of the above formula, which is then allowed to cure. After curing one or more clear acrylic resin coatings are applied consisting of 40% solids solubilized in methyl ethyl ketone. The surface coating of pearl-shell flakes may be sandpapered to remove excessive roughness before the clear resin coating is applied.
