An induction motor has a D.C. machine M on the same shaft, the secondary voltage from the A.C. motor being supplied through a rectifier to the armature of the D.C. machine. For operation at low speeds, a second D.C. machine A is provided with means for connecting it in series with the machine M. The speed is first reduced by applying full field to the machine M, and switch C is then closed and switch B is opened. During this switching operation, the voltage of the machine A is zero, but, as the field of the machine A is strengthened, the speed falls to a desired value. The machine A may be coupled to the shaft of the induction motor, or may be coupled to an induction generator.
