978,098. Pipe couplings. ALLIED IRONFOUNDERS Ltd. Sept. 30, 1963 [Oct. ], 1962], No. 37062/62. Heading F2G. A method of joining pipes, one of which is made of a thermoplastics material having the property of plastic memory contraction, comprises forming a socket 3 at the end of the pipe 1 having plastic memory contraction by enlarging the end of the pipe, fitting at or near the end of the other pipe 2 and on the outer surface thereof a sealing ring 4 having an outwardly directed flange 6 of a diameter greater than the internal diameter of the enlarged end portion of the pipe 1, pressing the said other pipe with the sealing ring into the socket and causing plastic memory contraction of the socket by the application of heat. Pipe 1 is preferably of polyvinylchloride, cellulose acetate, acrylonitrile butydiene styrene or methyl methacrylate. The ring 4 may have a plurality of flanges 6 and is provided with an inturned flange 5. Pipe 2 is of a non-resilient material and may be the spigot of a ceramic water closet pan.
