Abstract

The invention comprises N-substituted dehydroemetine derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0977789/C1/1> where R is a C2 or C3 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group; non-toxic acid addition salts and bismuth halide addition complexes of these compounds; and processes for preparing the compounds in which (1) 2-dehydroemetine is directly N-alkylated, (2) the N-acyl derivative is prepared which is then reduced, (3) 2-dehydroemetine is reacted with the appropriate aldehyde and the condensation product reduced, and (4) an allylic ketone of the general formula <FORM:0977789/C1/2> is reduced directly or via the thioketal. Detailed examples describe the preparation of (1) N-ethyl-2, 3-dehydroemetine and (2) N-n-propyl-2, 3-dehydroemetine via amide intermediates as in process (2) above. The above compounds may be used as amoebicides. According to the Provisional Specification, R may be an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or esterified hydroxyalkyl group having 1-7 carbon atoms, especially an n-butyl group.
