Abstract
977,439. Mooring ships. BP TANKER CO. Ltd., J. W. ROSS, and K. W. HOPKINS. July 8, 1963 [Aug. 17, 1962], No. 31642/62. Headings B7A and B7S. A mooring arrangement comprises a floatable member 11 adapted to be positioned in the water so as to be capable of rotating about a horizontal axis 12 and means (hook 17 and cables 16) for mooring the member to the ship 15, all in such manner that when the ship tends to move in a direction away from the floating member the latter rotates about said horizontal axis to allow such movement. The member 11 is a hollow metal cylinder weighted at one end by concrete 14, and is rotatably mounted on longitudinal members 13 welded to a member 18 rotatably mounted on a mooring buoy 19. The ship is also moored by cables 26 to the members 13, which cables restrain the ship from moving towards the floatable member 11. A resilient member 25 is provided to prevent the ship from damaging the member 11 if the cables 26 should part. The ship may be loaded with liquid cargo from pipelines 27 on the sea bed via apparatus on the buoy as described in Specification 977,438, and thence through pipes on or in the longitudinal member 13.
