Abstract

977,193. Telemotor steering systems. HYDROSTEER Ltd. Sept. 13, 1963 [Feb. 7, 1963], No. 4993/63. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F1] In a telemotor system for operating, e.g. a vehicle steering mechanism, wherein a pair of single-acting hydraulic motors 4, 8 operate the steering mechanism when supplied through pipes 3, 7 with liquid from a steering wheel operated reversible positive displacement rotary pump 2, e.g. a gear pump, a branch pipe 11 communicates with a pressurized reservoir and valve unit and is arranged to (a) close communication between the reservoir and the pipes during normal operation, (b) relieve excess pressure in the pipes to the reservoir, and (c) allow fluid to enter the pipes when the pressure therein is lower than the reservoir pressure. The reservoir and valve unit (Fig. 2) comprises two chambers 15, 16 separated by a wall 14 containing two spring-loaded non-return valves 17, 18 working in opposite direction. A connection 13 leads to a pressure source which may be gas, or as shown, the vehicle oil pump 13A. The branch pipe 11 may be omitted and the pipe 7 led into and out of the chamber 16. In an alternative arrangement the pipes 3, 7 supply a double-acting motor and are branched to the pressurized reservoir, one branch containing an unloaded non-return valve, and the other an unloaded non-return valve and a relief valve.
