Abstract

977,136. Disc brakes. GIRLING LTD. Oct 4, 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962; Dec. 8, 1962], Nos. 37682/62 and 46416/62. Heading F2E. In a disc brake having friction pads adapted to be brought into engagement with opposite faces of a disc at least one friction pad is carried by a member mounted for angular movement about an axis which is inclined at an acute angle to the plane of the disc and to the direction of travel of the portion of the disc to be engaged, whereby the drag force acting on the pad is caused to apply a self-servo action to increase the force with which the pad is applied to the disc. In one embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3, a caliper 13 which straddles the disc 11 and includes an hydraulic cylinder 21 is mounted to swing about a pivot 16 which is inclined to the surface of the disc at an acute angle to the direction of movement of the adjacent disc portion. An arm 18 is similarly mounted on an oppositely inclined pivot 19. Pads 10, 17 are carried by the caliper and arm respectively for engagement with opposite faces of the disc. When fluid is supplied under pressure to cylinder 21, piston 22 applies pad 17 via the arm 18 and the reaction acts through the caliper 13 to apply the other pad 10. The drag forces acting on the pads swing the arm 18 and caliper 13 about their respective pivots to increase the forces applying the pads and thereby impart a self-servo action to the brake. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, the oppositely inclined axes are provided by a cruciform member 24 to which U-shaped portions of the arm 18 and caliper 14 are pivoted. In a further embodiment. Fig. 7, the caliper has an integral arm 44 and the arm has an integral extension 45, these extensions being connected together by a universal joint 46 arranged in the plane of the disc 31 which has a recessed central portion 33, while universal joints 38, 43 connect the respective extensions with a fixed support plate 39 arranged in a plane parallel to that of the disc. The inclined arcs are then provided by lines joining the centres of universal joints 38, 46 and 43, 46, respectively.
