Abstract

The invention comprises 9b -estra-1, 3, 5(10)-triene derivatives having the formula <FORM:0976727/C1/1> in which R and R1, which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom, an acyl radical derived from a carboxylic acid having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, pharmaceutical compositions thereof and a process for the preparation thereof in which a 9b , 10a -19-nor-4-en-3-one derivative having the formula <FORM:0976727/C1/2> is heated in a solvent in the presence of a palladium catalyst to yield the corresponding 3-hydroxy-9b -estra-1, 3, 5(10)-triene. As catalyst there may be used palladium hydroxide on magnesia. Said compositions having oestrogenic activity may be administered enterally, parenterally or topically as tablets, pills and glossets, as sterile injectable solutions and suspensions, as suppositories, ovules and implants, and in the form of ointments.
