Abstract
976,650. Automatic lathes. CONE AUTOMATIC MACHINE CO. Inc. May 29, 1962, No. 20576/62. Headings B3C and B3T. In addition to conventional tool turret feed mechanisms on multi-spindle lathes feeding means may be provided and incorporated with the known means to permit the feeding of either a single or a number of cutting tools in a particular machining operation. The additional feeding means comprises cam housings 74, 76, for rotatable feed cams 80, 82, which are movable with drill spindles 25, 27 and 29 along the turret towards and away from the workpieces. The cams have identical contours and are formed to provide the precise movement and dwell of the cutting tools in relation to the work. Slow feed and rapid withdrawal of the tools are effected through gear drive 146, 140 and bevel gears 142, 150, respectively, from the input shaft 115, and the drive is transmitted to the cam-shafts 122, 124 by chain 116 and sprockets 118, 120. Alternate engagement of the high and low speed drives is effected by high and low speed clutches 148 and 160 which are actuated through a lever 176 by a fluid motor 180. The engagement of the respective clutch is effected by a cam-operated switch 200 in co-operation with other timing switches (not shown) which facilitates timing and sequential operation of the device.
