Abstract

976,618. Forced flow steam boilers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Nov. 15, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1962], No. 45226/63. Heading F4A. A forced flow, once through steam boiler operating at supercritical pressure and with two stages of reheat comprises first and second upright, tube-lined furnaces from each of which lead first and second gas passes, superheaters being located in both of the first gas passes and reheaters in both said second passes, means being provided to control the gas flows through the passes rnd separately to regulate the rate of firing of both furnaces to maintain the superheat and reheat temperatures constant over a wide load range. In the form shown the unit comprises parallel upright furnaces 12, 14 lined with generating tubes 16, 18 respectively. Gas passes 20, 22 and 24, 26 lead respectively from the furnaces 12, 14, the left-hand passes 20, 24 housing superheater sections 28, 30 and the right-hand passes 22, 26 housing first stage and second stage reheaters 32, 34 respectively. The two furnaces are separately fired by burners 96 whilst the gas flows through the passes are controlled by outlet dampers such as 90, 92, Fig. 2. Steam flows from the superheaters 28, 30 to a mixing header 48 and thence to the highpressure turbine 36. The exhaust steam flows to headers 54, 56 and thence through pipes 58, 60 lining the gas pass walls, pipes 58a, 60a passing across the furnace roofs where they are exposed to radiant heat and pipes 58b, 60b lining the walls of the passes 22, 26 to headers 66, 68 whence it flows through a line 69 to and through the reheater 32 to return to an intermediate turbine 38. Exhaust from this turbine is reheated in the reheater 34 and returned to the low-pressure turbine 42. Steam temperatures are held constant over a wide load range by differentially firing the furnaces and proportioning the gases from each between the two associated gas passes.
