Abstract

976,558. Exercising apparatus. TEAME ENGINEERING CO., and G. T. ELLIS. July 19, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 16066/62. Heading A6M. An exercising appliance having cranks adapted to receive the limbs of a patient, has transmission means connecting a prime mover to said cranks including a torque limiting coupling. The appliance comprises a structure having foot pedals 17 on a shaft 15 and hand cranks 18 on a shaft 16, both of which shafts are coupled to an electric motor 6 by means of a tyred wheel 3, frictionally coupled to said motor, and a chain or belt 13 positively coupling the wheel 3 to the shafts 15, 16. The motor is pivotally mounted on an axis 8 and the pressure of coupling between motor 6 and wheel 3 is effected by a winged nut 12 whereby an element of slip may be effected to allow the patient to exercise muscles by, at the same time, interrupting the drive from the motor and establishing a drive from the hands or feet. The patient would be normally moved to the appliance in a wheeled chair from the right in Fig. 1.
