Abstract

Halogen-substituted aromatic compounds are produced by thermal decomposition of the vapour of aromatic sulphonyl halides so that sulphur-dioxide is evolved and a halogen atom appears in the aromatic nucleus. It is preferred to catalyze the decomposition with Pt, Pd, Cu or an oxide or halide thereof. Examples describe the production of chlorobenzene and fluorobenzene. The following reaction products are also specified:-bromobenzene, o-, m- and p-difluorobenzenes, o- and m-dichlorobenzenes, m- and p-dibromobenzenes, m-chlorobromo-benzene, 2, 4-dibromotoluene, 2-chloro-6-iodo-ethylbenzene; p-chloro, m-bromo- and 2, 41-difluorodiphenyl, 2, 21-difluorodiphenyl ether; 2-bromo-, 1, 5-dichloro- and 1, 3, 6-tribromo-naphthalene- and 4-bromodibenzothiophene. Mention is made of the use of aromatic sulphonyl halides containing benzene, diphenyl, naphthalene, benzofuran, thiophene and pyridine nuclei generally. Specification 959,605 also is referred to.
