Abstract

A process for improving the adhesion between a surface and a polyurethane foam formed on that surface consists in pretreating the surface with a prepolymer which contains the reaction product and/or mixture of a hydroxyl-group-containing polymer with more than the equivalent amount of an organic polyisocyanate before the polyurethane foamforming mixture is placed on the surface and allowed to react. The surface to which the polyurethane is applied may be textiles of wool, cotton, silk, rayon, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, nylon or polypropylene; wood; plastic; leather; asbestos; aluminium; steel; natural rubber; or synthetic polymers such as butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, vinyl polymers and copolymers such as those of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, nylon, or polyethylene terephthalate; it may be roughened before coating. The prepolymer and the foam-forming mixture may each contain an organic polyisocyanate and a polyester, polyesteramide or polyether of which many examples are given; the prepolymer may also contain a substance such as b -trichloroethyl phosphate, dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate which has a slight solvent effect on the substrate to be coated. The prepolymer may be applied by spreading, by brushing or by spray gun and the foam-forming mixture then poured on, even while the prepolymer is still fluid. Examples are given of coating steel and aluminium sheets, and surface-sheet of polyvinyl chloride and of mixed polyvinyl chloride and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer.
