[Also in Divisions B1 B2, B8 and F1] A pattern for making moulds for casting the volute casing of a centrifugal pump is made by the apparatus shown in Fig. 12, comprising a hollow shaft 78 carrying a pattern generator 79 in the form of a pair of parallel discs, a semicircular gap between the peripheries of the discs being covered by an elastic membrane 84. While the pattern generator 79 is slowly rotated by means of a handle 86, compressed air is introduced through the hollow shaft 78 into the interior of the pattern generator to inflate the membrane 84. Material 87, such as plaster, clay or the like, within a container 75 is thus displaced by the expanding membrane 84 to form a cavity 88 which gradually widens in the manner of a volute. Probes 91, Fig. 14, are then pressed into the material until they are flush with the inside surface 95 of the voluteshaped cavity and are used as guides for trimming the material to a uniform thickness 98.
