Abstract

A process for expanding expandable thermoplastic polymer particles comprises dusting them with a solid water-soluble surface active agent and thereafter contacting the particles with steam under conditions such that an aqueous condensate phase is formed on the resulting expanded particles and then water-washing the expanded particles to remove surface active agent therefrom. By "expandable polymer particles" is meant polymer particles containing a volatile expanding agent, e.g. n-butane or n-pentane which will cause expansion of the particles by vaporization, that is by physical as distinct from chemical means. The particles may be of polystyrene, copolymers of styrene and another vinyl compound or acrylonitrile, or of acrylic resins e.g. polymethyl methacrylate. Isobutane, neopentane 1- or 2-butene, isobutene and butadiene are other specified expanding agents. The surface active agent is preferably a water-soluble salt of a long-chain fatty acid, especially sodium stearate. Ammonium and amine salts, potassium stearate, the sodium and potassium salts of lauric, tridecylic, myristic, pentadecylic, palmitic, margaric and nondecylic acids, and also cationic and nonionic types are also specified. Any tendency to foaming of the aqueous condensate is prevented by adding, together with the surface active agent, a solid substance forming an acid solution in water (e.g. boric, tartaric or citric acid), to bring the pH of the effluent wash liquor to a pH between 6 and 10.
