Abstract

In a mechanical storage arrangement, the store presents sequentially each of a number of code combinations at a reading position. When all the combinations have been read the store is moved so that no code combination is in the reading position. The store comprises a drum 1 having pins 3 which represent twenty 5-bit code combinations. The message stored is that transmitted in response to a WRU signal. In order that the reading fingers 2 can be used in the transmission of keyed data as well as of the Answer Back, after the fixed message has been sent the drum is so positioned that no pins 3 lie under the fingers. To this end, in one embodiment, Fig. 2, the ratchet 8 used to step the drum is formed with a second ratchet 20. When the WRU signal is received cam 17 is rotated and arm 4 disengaged from slot 5, whereby the first code combination is presented to the reading fingers 2 by the action of pawl 10. When the twentieth character has been read, earn 17 stops, with rise 14 engaging follower 16, and arm 4 reengages. Slot 5 is wide and allows pawl 21, now engaging ratchet 20, to move the drum from the twentieth position to the rest position shown, at which there are no pins 3. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, the store is movable axially against action of spring 25 by means of cam 24 and pin 27. The fingers, in the rest position, lie just to the right of the pin 3 positions so that when cam 17 first starts to rotate pin 27 pushes the drum rightwards, bringing the first combination under the fingers. As the drum is rotated it moves progressively to the right, the fingers being at the left-hand edges of the pins when reading the twentieth combination. When cam 17 stops in the position shown, pin 27 reverts to the low of cam 24 and the drum is urged to the left, or rest, position.
