Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized using as catalyst a mixture of (a) the reaction product of vanadium tetrachloride with aluminium, (b) a compound containing at least one hydrogen-silicon bond and (c) a higher halide of a transition metal from Group IV to VI. Component (a) is preferably formed by reducing vanadium tetrachloride with aluminium powder in a hydrocarbon solvent and the product is preferably ball-milled in the dry state. Suitable silicon compounds include silicon hydrides, organosilanes and siloxanes, the preferred compounds being hydropolysiloxanes such as methyl hydrogen silicone oil of formula <FORM:0975969/C3/1> Preferred (c) components are titanium tetrachloride, vanadium tetrachloride and mixtures of the two; the term "higher halide" meaning a halide of a transition metal in which the transition metal has the highest valency which is shown by that metal when in binary combination with that halogen. The catalyst components are preferably mixed together in the polymerization medium which is either an inert diluent or the liquefied monomer which is to be polymerized. In the examples ethylene is polymerized with a catalyst comprising titanium tetrachloride, the ball-milled reaction product of vanadium tetrachloride and aluminium powder and either methyl hydrogen silicone oil or diphenyl silane, the polymerization medium being a high-boiling petrol fraction.
