975,959. Welding by fusion. LINCOLN ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., E. S. POLLARD, K. G. LAVENDER, and G. H. BATTEN. July 18, 1962 [July 19, 1961], No. 26241/61. Heading B3R. Circumferential arc welding apparatus comprises a switching device which extinguishes the arc when the workpiece and the apparatus have relatively rotated through a predetermined angle after the striking of the arc. Either the workpiece or the apparatus may be rotated. Actuation of a start button starts the rotation of the workpiece the welding wire feed motor and connects up the welding current. When the arc strikes a solenoid 15 swings links 33 by means of a resilient connection 43 to engage a timing wheel 34 with a driving wheel 35 rotating at the same speed as the work. The timing wheel 34 is rotated from a home position determined by engagement of a bolt 14 adjustable in a slot 26 with a stop 25 on a link 33. Cams 41, 40 mounted on a bolt 23 adjustable on a slot 27 of the timing wheel actuate switches 22 to first stop the wire feed motor and then to disconnect the welding current. The consequent de-energization of the solenoid 15 disengages the timing wheel 34 from the driving wheel 35 and a spring 13 returns the timing wheel 34 to its home position.
