Abstract

975,745. Abrading. GILDMORE PRESS Ltd. Oct. 18, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1962], No. 41347/62. Heading B3D. [Also in Divisions B6 and F4] An abrading, grinding or polishing apparatus comprises a sanding head movable in a vertical plane and along a substantially horizontal path, said sanding head comprising a plurality of abrading, grinding or polishing rollers or drums rotatably driven around their own axes and movable in a circular path around a common central axis to bring each of said rollers or drums selectively into an operative position, means being provided for locking said rollers or drums in one of a plurality of selected positions around said common axis to maintain one of said rollers or drums in said operative position. Apparatus for smoothing the edges of book leaves and playing cards prior to gilding and designed especially for attachment to a gilding machine according to Specification 815,002 comprises a sanding head 3 and an electric motor 4 mounted at opposite ends of an arm 5 pivoted, for movement in a vertical plane, at 6 to a bracket 7 on a vertical column 8 having a cross-arm 9 with rollers 10, 10 running on a horizontal rail 11 fixed at the upper end of a post 12 forming part of a supporting frame. The motor 4 drives, through a belt 13, a gear 15 keyed on a central shaft 16 and meshing with four pinions 17 mounted in a casing 14 and each driving a sanding roller 18. The rollers 18 have sheaths of four different grades of sand paper or glass paper. The casing 14 is rotatable about the shaft 16, but during operation is locked in one of four positions by a pivoted catch 19 urged by a spring 24 into engagement with one of four pins 25 projecting from the outer wall of the casing 14. The catch 19 is movable out of engagement by a crank handle 20, whereupon the easing 14 is rotated by a handle 27a to its next position in which it is again locked, thus bringing a different sanding roller 18 into operative position. A dust extraction nozzle 27 connected with a flexible vacuum pipe 28 is mounted with its mouth adjacent the operative sanding roller 18. The nozzle 27 is carried from a support 29 by parallel linkage 23 connected by a link 22 to a lever 21 keyed to the shank 20a of the crank handle 20, so that the nozzle is automatically moved away from the sanding head when the crank handle 20 is operated to release the catch 19, permitting rotation of the casing 14 without the sanding rollers 18 fouling the nozzle. Book leaves or playing cards 30 are clamped between jaws 31, 32, and the surface 34 then smoothed, commencing with the roller having the coarsest sheath and finishing with the roller having the finest sheath. Belt drives may be used instead of gears. Operation of the handle 20 to disengage the catch 19 may actuate a switch to stop the motor 4. Specification 815,002 is referred to.
