Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0975703/C1/1> (wherein R is a dibasic acid residue and Z is a monovalent cation), their preparation by (a) esterifying 5-hydroxymethyl-1-(5-nitro-2-furfurylidenamino) -hydantoin with a dibasic acid or anhydride thereof or (b) reacting a monoester of 5-hydroxymethyl-1-benzylidenaminohydantoin and a dibasic acid with 5-nitro-2-furaldehydediacetate in acid medium, optionally followed in either case by salt formation, and pharmaceutical or veterinary preparations containing them in association with a diluent or carrier. The acid phthalate of 5-hydroxymethyl-1-benzyl-idenaminohydantoin is prepared from the parent alcohol and phthalic anhydride. The compounds of the invention are bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents and may be administered orally, parenterally or topically in the form of pharmaceutical or veterinary preparations (e.g. tablets, powders, lyophilized preparations and solutions) containing them in association with a diluent or carrier.
