975,633. Moulding polytetrafluoroethylene tubing. RAYBESTOS-MANHATTAN Inc. Oct. 9, 1961, No. 36162/61. Heading B5A. In a method of forming polytetrafluoroethylene tubing, having an improved resistance to seepage by low viscosity fluids, an annular billet, comprising finely divided polytetrafluoroethylene particles and a volatile extrusion aid, e.g. white oil or naphtha, is forced by a ram 18 between a hollow mantle 10 and a mandrel 15 and through an annular space bounded by a tapered circular surface 12 of the die, and mandrel 15 in which the cross-sectional area of the preform is reduced by at least 90%, thus forming the resin particles into longitudinally extending fibres, the outer and inner layer fibres then being displaced in opposite directions relative to each other by means of grooves 16 and 19 in the mandrel and the die, the crosssectional area in this grooved region up to the cylindrical annular die formed by opposed surfaces 14, 17 being further reduced by between 50 and 95%, thus making the respective surface layer fibres lie at an angle of at least 15 degrees with respect to each other, passing said billet through said annular die opening to form a tube, removing the extrusion aid, and sintering the tube. There may be provided rotational movement between the die and the mandrel, or the latter may remain in fixed relationship. Alternative apparatus is described with reference to Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), the latter being for the wall tubes of large diameter.
