[Also in Divisions F1 and G1] A liquid flowmeter has its indicator 7 housed in a sealed casing 8 formed of a transparent material or including a panel g of the same sealed about an inspection opening 11 in the meter housing 1 whereby the indicating components are visible through the transparency, the housing having in its liquid receiving space a compressible material 16, 17 formed of an expanded rigid plastic. The meter described has a unit housing 4 containing a gyrating ring-piston 4a which turns the indicator 7 by way of a shaft 5 and gears 6 and 13. The casing 8 has an opening for the shaft of gear 13 sealed by an 0-ring and an opening for the panel 9 sealed by a washer 11. The casing 8 is filled with a substantially transparent lubricating liquid and pressure inside and outside the casing is equalised by the lubricating liquid being exposed to the pressure of the liquid in the housing 1 through a flexible sac (Fig. 1, not shown) which is connected to the inside of the casing. The material 16, 17 consists of pads of expanded rigid polystrene or poly-vinyl-chloride in which individual cells are not interconnected. The behaviour of these formers of plastic under pressure in comparison with that of expanded rubber is discussed in the Specification. Specification 936,929 is referred to.
