Abstract
Vinyl chloride, together with not more than 20 wt. per cent. of a comonomer such as vinylidene chloride or vinyl propionate or acetate, is suspension polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of 0.1 to 3 wt. per cent. (of the monomers) of an oxide or hydroxide of a Group IIA metal and the product is separated and dried without removal of the metal oxide. A protective colloid, e.g. part hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, methyl cellulose, an alginate or tragacanth may also be used. The products are useful in electrical insulating compositions. In examples vinyl chloride is polymerised in (1) alone and (2) with vinyl acetate. The presence of part hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol or methyl cellulose and magnesium oxide using lauroyl peroxide as catalyst and the product compounded with (1) octyl phthalate and lead stearate and (2) dioctyl phthalate, lead stearate, tribasic lead sulphate and a proprietary pigment.
