Abstract
975,270. Moulding pulp. DIAMOND NATIONAL CORPORATION. May 2, 1961, No. 15927/61. Heading B5A. In a process for making a mould for suction moulding pulp articles, such as that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 mould form 50 is partly filled with a mixture fibreglass strands and epoxy resin. In Fig. 5 a number of layers of fibreglass cloth 53 and epoxy resin 54 are shown, but these may be omitted. Tubes 13 are placed across mould and the mould filled leaving ends 14, 17 clear. The resin is then cured, ends 14 trimmed off and sealed with member 15 which may be, for example, a strip of epoxy resin impregnated fibreglass. Ends 17 are sealed into holes in manifold 18 and additional fibreglass-resin mixture used to enclose ends 14 and manifold 18. When the mould has been finally cured, drainage holes 19 are drilled from numerous points on the moulding face of the mould into the tubes. When used for moulding pulp a source of suction is connected to manifold 18 or, alternatively, to remove the moulded pump article a source of pressure air. The device is said to eliminate wetting the moulded article as it is blown off the mould. In another embodiment the ends 14 closed in the above mould may be connected to a second manifold through which pressure air is supplied to remove the moulded article from the mould, suction only being applied to the first manifold thus completely eliminating wetting of the moulded article on removal from the mould by blow-back of water in the suction system. Fig. 9 illusstrates an alternative method of making a suction mould wherein a framework 90 of low melting point material is placed in a mould box 91 over a layer of fibreglass cloth 92 and suspended by the members 93. Casting material is then poured in and allowed to cure. The cured mould is then heated to melt the framework which is poured out to leave passages 97 and manifolds 98 (Fig. 12). Thereafter drainage holes 99 are drilled.
