Abstract

975,067. Cleaning pipes. E. L. WARD. Aug. 22, 1963 [Aug. 24, 1962; Dec. 8, 1962], Nos. 32529/62 and 46406/62. Heading F2N. A device usable in cleaning the interiors of pipes and tubes comprises a flexible elongated member forming a rotatable flexible spine which carries a plurality of axially-spaced, transverse discs 2 of larger diameter than that of the spine each having a radially directed slot or slit extending inwardly from the periphery, the discs being inclined to the main axis of the flexible spine and held in position by associated locating and retaining means. The spine is formed of a helical wire coil 1 and the discs 2 are inserted between the turns of the coil. The radial slot in each disc accommodates the wire so that the disc can be centred but the width of the slot is such that the discs are distorted when assembled and the edges of their slots become separated axially and present axially-spaced leading and trailing edges. The discs are retained by a wire or flexible rod 7 along the axis of the coil which passes through holes in the centre of the discs, and are located by sleeves 9 inside the coil. Alternatively, the locating sleeves may be outside the wire coil. The device is adapted to be rotated by closely coiling the wire and reducing the diameter of the coil at one end, termed the inner end, forming a spigot 10 for fitting to a rod. At this end the wire or rod 7 is held by a ferrule 12 and at the outer end by a ferrule 13, between which and the outer disc is a spring 15. The discs may be of increasing diameters from the outer to the inner. The wire coil may be protected by a plastic covering. The outer end of the wire coil may be extended to carry guide rollers.
