Abstract

Sulphonated cross-linked vinyl-benzene polymers are treated with oleum between 50-120 DEG C. to increase the sulphonic acid content. Suitable monomers e.g. styrene, vinyl ethyl benzenes or vinyl xylenes, are co-polymerized with 1-20% by weight of divinyl-benzene or -toluene or trivinyl benzene. The resulting polymer is sulphonated with either chlorosulphonic acid or sulphuric acid to give a sulphonated polymer with 0.7-1 sulphonic acid groups per nucleus. This polymer is further sulphonated with 4-20 times its weight of oleum (containing 10-70% of free sulphur trioxide) giving a polymer with 1.2-2 sulphonic acid groups per nucleus and may be used as a cation-exchange resin. Sulphonated cross-linked vinylbenzene polymers containing 1.2-2 sulphonic acid groups per benzene nucleus measured on the basis of the ion-exchange capacity of the resin are also claimed per se. Specifications 577,707 and 894,391 are referred to.
