Abstract

974,681. Phase detectors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1962], No. 5858/62. Heading H3A. Two A.C. voltages are phase compared by applying pulses P, Q from them to opposite sides A, B of a bi-stable circuit F3 through AND-gates G3A, G3B which are enabled (opened) alternately but not by every pulse P, Q applied to them. To this end a further bistable switch F2 operated alternately to opposite states by one set of pulses P, applied to opposite sides of F2 through AND-gates G2A, G2B which are alternately enabled from one side A of F3 and from the corresponding opposite side B of bi-stable switch F2. The other side B of output bi-stable circuit F3 then produces rectangular waves of duration greater than the interval between successive Q pulses and dependent on the phase difference between P, Q and the two A.C. voltages which rectangular waves, e.g. through a telegraph line L, operate a meter V. Preferably the pulses P, Q, render non-conducting the sides of the bistable circuits to which they are applied and non-conduction produces an enabling output voltage to the gates. The A.C. waves may be converted to pulses by applying them over Zener or other diodes forming trapezoidal waveforms, which are then differentiated and output pulses of one polarity then suppressed.
