Abstract
<PICT:0974605/C4-C5/1> Hydrocarbon conversion processes employing Friedel-Crafts catalyst are carried out in a reactor which is protected from corrosion by establishing a circuit in the reactor by imposing a negative charge on the reactor surface exposed to the catalyst and providing at least one anode to complete the circuit. The circuit may be established either as shown in the Figure by insulating the anode 2 from reactor 1 and applying a direct current when the anode metal is deposited as a film on the surface of the reactor or by providing an anode, e.g. aluminium which is less noble than the reactor metal, e.g. nickel or steel, thereby providing a galvanic circuit. Reactor surface metals specified are antimony, iron, steel, nickel, platinum and aluminium. Catalysts specified are aluminium chloride and antimony chloride with or without hydrochloric acid and hexafluoroantimonic acid with or without hydrofluoric acid. Reactions specified are the isomerization of hydrocarbons, butane being exemplified.ALSO:Hydrocarbon conversion processes employing Friedel-Crafts catalyst are carried out in a reactor which is protected from corrosion by <PICT:0974605/C6-C7/1> establishing a circuit in the reactor by imposing a negative charge on the reactor surface exposed to the catalyst and providing at least one anode to complete the circuit.
