Abstract

1486108 Reforming and isomerisation catalysts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Jan 1976 [27 Feb 1975] 8225/75 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] A catalyst comprising a support upon which is a sputtered metal of Group VIII is used to reform a gasoline boiling range feed in the presence of hydrogen or to hydroisomerise an alkyl benzene or a mixture of alkyl benzenes. In the Example, 1/16 inch spheres of calcined gamma-alumina are sputtered with platinum from a platinum cathode in an evacuated chamber to form a coating on the spheres; the platinised alumina spheres containing 0.05-0.07 wt.% platinum are chlorided with hydrogen chloride and used to reform a C 6 -C 9 naphtha at 340 psig and either 480‹C or 500‹C. The catalysts can also contain other catalytically active metals and can be formed by directly sputtering the support with one or more metals either together or successively, coating the support with previously sputtered particles, or agglomerating sputtered particles. The support can be granular, fibrous or a metal honeycomb. The sputtering can be carried out by bombarding a source of the catalytic metal in the neighbourhood of the support with ions from an ion accelerator, ion separator or ion gun or with electrons provided by making an electrical discharge to a cathode of the metal to be sputtered.
