974,599. Ice axes; hand tool handles. H. MACINNES. Oct. 3, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 40209/62. Headings B4B, B4C and B4K. [Also in Division B8] An ice axe has a tubular metallic shaft 1 having a head 5 mounted at one end and a spike 13 at the other end and at least a portion of the length between the ends of the shaft is of oval cross-section. As described, the shaft is made of anodized steel or aluminium alloy enclosed in a coloured elastomeric covering. The head 5 which may include an adze 6 or a hammer, and a pick 7, is secured to the shaft by an insert 11, and rivets 19 with their axes at right angles to each other, and includes a belaying hole 12. The spike 13 is screw threaded at 14 into a ferrule 15 which is riveted to the shaft at 20.
