A telegraph system includes at the transmitter, means for deriving a plurality of check signals from a block of signal elements, each check signal comprising a number of elements which are individually derived from different groups of signal elements in the block, the different check signals being derived in accordance with different mathematical laws, and at the receiver, means is provided for deriving corresponding check signals from the received block of signal elements and for comparing them with the transmitted check signals in order to detect errors.
