A binary data transmission system is characterized by the distribution of adjacent bits received on to different channels, whereby multiple errors on the transmission channel appear as single errors in the receiver channels. Each channel includes error detecting and/or correcting means. In the embodiment illustrated data words containing an equal number of bits are multiplexed on to a common transmission channel. Errors, e.g. B2, C2, are detected by means associated with each demultiplexed channel at the receiver.
