Abstract

973,785. Splicing and couplings. AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO. Inc. Oct. 21, 1963, No. 41488/63. Heading D1T. A splice between two wire lines which abut one another at their respective ends is characterized in that a plurality of helically disposed parallel wires extend along each wire line, and a flat type-like wire is wrapped around the helically disposed wires. In Fig. 1, the wires 10 and 11 abut and are joined together by the helically disposed wires 12, the assembled wires 12 being wrapped in a flat tape-like wire 13. In Fig. 4, a wire 23 is joined to a stranded wire 20. The stranded wire 20 has had its outer strands 22 unlaid to expose its core 21 and the core 21 has been cut off at 24. The wire 23 is butted against the core 21 and the unlaid strands 22 are wrapped around the wire 23. A flat tapelike wire 25 is then wrapped around the strands 22. In a modified construction Fig. 7, (not shown) the wire 23 is replaced by a stranded wire, and the strands 22 are so wrapped around the stranded wire 23 that the strands 22 follow the valleys between the outer wires of the stranded wire 23. Splicing armoured strands of different diameters. The armour is unwrapped from the strands of both lines to be spliced by a sufficient distance to form the splice. The armour that is unwrapped from the smaller strand is cut off and discarded. The core of the larger strand (whether a wire or a group of wires) is removed from the larger strand by unlaying the outer wires thereof and cutting the core out. The smaller strand is butted against the shortened core of the larger strand and the unlaid outer wires thereof are laid around the smaller strand. The armour of the larger strand is then replaced. A ferrule may overlay the cut ends of the armoured strands.
