Abstract

973,679. Lubricant and gasoline compositions. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 15, 1962 [Aug. 4, 1961], No. 23098/62. Headings C5F and C5G. A lubricant composition for addition to gasoline for use in 2-stroke engines comprises a highly refined petroleum lubricating oil base stock, having a viscosity in the range 58-85 S.S.U. at 210‹ F., containing 1-6 % vol. of one or more defined ashless oil-soluble detergents and an alkyl or aryl halide lead scavenging agent (e.g. ethylene dibromide) which is present in sufficient quantity to provide 0.4-2 theories of scavenger on the basis of mixing 1 vol. of the lubricant with 10-40 vols. of a fuel containing 2-3 ml. of tetraethyl lead per U.S. gallon. The ashless detergent is selected from the following classes: (a) hydrocarbon-soluble ashless compounds containing polar nitrogen groups (e.g. amino, amido, imido, imidazolino and pyrrolidino), and of M.W. above 250; these compounds may also contain hydroxy and alkoxy groups; (b) polymeric dispersents of M.W. 500-50,000 made from one or more polar monomers (e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidone, methacrylates, fumarates and maleates). Examples of these detergents are given. The compositions may also contain a conventional detergent, such as high alkalinity barium sulphonates, calcium sulphonates, alkaline earth metal alkyl phenates, and alkaline earth metal phenol sulphides. Other optional ingredients which perform their customary function are amines (e.g. phenyl α- naphthylamine), phenols (e.g. 2,6-di-tert.-butylp-cresol and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-methylene-bis(2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol)), dimerized linoleic acid, molybdenum sulphide, and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.
