Abstract
973,476. Films of olefine oxide polymers. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Nov. 23, 1961 [Dec. 8, 1960], No. 41909/61, Heading B5B. The stress endurance of a film comprised essentially of olefine oxide polymer is improved by subjecting the film, while at a temperature below the melting-point or first order transition to simultaneous application of compressive force and concentric shearing action. The latter is defined as the shearing force exerted between adjacent layers of a film when it is passed between converging rolls. The compressive force is of such magnitude as to cause substantial flow of polymer in a plane perpendicular to the direction of the applied compressive force, thus causing a reduction of film thickness, e.g. of from one-tenth to one half. The forces of compression, shear and the tension resulting therefrom, may be applied by a process of cold-rolling wherein a web of film is passed between the nip of adjacent cylindrical metal rolls. The polymer may be a homopolymer of e.g. ethylene oxide, or a copolymer, e.g. a copolymer comprised of at least 50% of ethylene oxide and up to 50% of either propylene oxide or butylene oxide. In examples, poly(ethylene oxide) films are cold-rolled at 10-25‹ C. The process may also be applied to wires, yarns and filaments coated with a polymeric olefine oxide.
