Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0973015/C1/1> wherein R represents a mercapto group or an etherified hydroxy or mercapto group and wherein the broken lines denote optional double bonds, and acid addition and quaternary salts of the basic compounds. The above compounds are prepared by reacting a halogenide of the formula: <FORM:0973015/C1/2> wherein X is a halogen atom with a compound of the formula R-A, wherein A represents a hydrogen atom or an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal (in the presence of an acid-binding agent where A represents a hydrogen atom) and, if desired, converting the product if basic into an acid addition or quaternary salt. The examples describe the preparation of farnesyl methyl ether, farnesyl butyl ether, farnesyl mercaptan, farnesyl methyl mercaptan, farnesyl dimethylaminoethyl ether and 1-methoxy-3, 7, 11-trimethyl-tridecatriene-(2, 6, 10). The above compounds may be used to exert an arresting influence on the pupation process of insects (e.g. the silk moth) and can also be used as odorants in the preparation of perfumes.
