Abstract

972,914. Infra-red transfer processes. DITTO Inc. Nov. 11, 1960 [June 2, 1960], No. 38805/60. Drawings to Specification. Heading G2C. A copy is prepared from an original sheet having imaged areas which are relatively infrared absorbing heat generating compared to the sheet, by assembling the original, a material supply sheet which carries a coating of material which is rendered plastic at a certain temperature and a copy sheet which has a surface adjacent the coating of transfer material, applying an evenly . distributed pressure to the assembly and imping- ing infra-red radiation thereon so that parts of the transfer coating corresponding to the image areas on the original are transferred to the copy sheet and remain there when the sheets are separated. The copy sheet may be the non-imaged surface of the original sheets and more than one copy sheet, original sheet and supply sheet may be used in the assembly. The sheets may be assembled in two basic ways (a) for the reflex technique in which the infra-red rays pass through the supply sheet to the original sheet and the heat generated passes in the opposite direction and (b) for the shoot-through technique in which the infra-red rays are directed straight on to the original and the heat passes in the same direction on to the supply sheet. Various assemblies are described for producing reversed and read-through copies on the copy sheet. The original sheet, the base of the supply sheet and the copy paper may be made of paper, cloth, plastic, glass, wood &c. provided they have the desired characteristics of smoothness, thickness and infra-red transparency: various numerical examples are given. The transfer material comprises a mixture of waxes, dyes and oils. The oils used are divided into two classes, "major" oils which are mineral oils and "minor" oils which are vegetable and animal oils. The dyes may be alcohol soluble dyes e.g. crystal violet, nigrosine, methyl violet or oil or wax soluble dyes e.g. A20 oil Red dye, oil Red 0 dye. Examples of the waxes used are paraffin wax, ceresin wax, natural mineral waxes, canauba, candelilla, Japan wax, flax wax, sugar cane wax, polyethylene glycol 6000, glycerol stearates, penter waxes, glycol fatty acid esters, bees wax, montan wax. Examples of the oils used are castor oil, lanolin, red Z oil. Specification 877,047 is referred to.
