Abstract

972,695. Thermographic copying methods and apparatus. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 2,1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 41546/60. Headings G2A and G2C. A copy is made thermographically by irradiating a graphic original having differentially absorptive areas to form a heat pattern corresponding to the graphic pattern and then bringing the heat pattern into heat-conductive pressure contact with a heat-sensitive copy paper. As shown an original 15 is moved past a lamp in an elliptical cross-section reflective housing 17 and between the nip of a pressure roller 13 and a driven roller 12 around which is led a strip 10 of heat-sensitive copy paper. One of the rollers bears a resilient covering, preferably roller 13. When the roller 13 is raised by operation of arms 24, switch 25 is opened so that the lamp is extinguished and feed of the sheet 10 stops since it slips on the driven roller which preferably is of polished metal. A switch 26 operated by the original may effect the control of the pressure roller and lamp automatically. The lamp 17 may be enclosed in a transparent evaculated housing having an outer reflective coating (Fig. 3 not shown).
