[Also in Division D1] Drive mechanism for a washing and spin drying machine (see Division D1) comprises two pulleys 45, 46 driven in opposite directions at different speeds by a reversible electric motor 49, each pulley freewheeling when rotated in one direction, but being connected to a tubular shaft 25 by means of one of a pair of roller clutches 47 when rotated in the opposite direction. Shaft 25 carries the washing machine tub 11 and surrounds a shaft 36 carrying an impeller 12. Pulley 46 can be drivingly connected to the impeller shaft 36 through a coil clutch spring 70 when not driving the tub shaft 25. Thus, pins 60 on the pulley 46 extend into P.V.C. bushes 61 in a plate 62 secured to a bush 63. The spring 70 surrounds the bush 63 and a second bush 67 keyed to the shaft 36. During spin drying, the impeller is not driven because the bush 63 tends to unwind the spring 70. By reversing the motor direction (for washing) the spring 70 is tensioned and the impeller is driven at high speed, the tub being rotated slowly by the pulley 45 and its roller clutch. The impeller drive can be disconnected by energizing a solenoid 80 (Fig. 3) so as to bring a detent 74 on a pivoted arm 75 into line with a projection 73 on a cap 69 to prevent rotation of the cap. The end 71 of the spring extends through a hole in this cap. Each roller clutch comprises a bearing sleeve 43 with two diametrically opposite slots 101 (Fig. 8) co-operating with flats 104 on a drive sleeve 41 and containing a roller 107. The rollers 107 are biased by bowed leaf-springs 106 and transmit drive from the pulley hub 100 or freewheel according to the direction of rotation of the pulley. The pulley 46 is driven through a pulley 51 (Fig. 2) and belt 54, and the pulley 45 is driven in the opposite direction through a worm reduction gear 56, a pulley 55 and belt 57. Belt 54 passes over idler pulleys 52, 53. In a modification (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) the pulley connected to pulley 46 is arranged at right-angles to the motor shaft and connected thereto by a flexible drive-shaft.
