Abstract

The invention relates to compounds of the general formula <FORM:0971819/C1/1> in which X or Y or both are halogen but one of them may be hydrogen and R is an alkyl radical of 1-3 carbon atoms. The compounds may be prepared by conventional methods from anilines and the corresponding carboxylic acids or derivatives thereof, such as halides, anhydrides or esters. In an example a , a -dimethyl-valeric acid -(4-chloroanilide) is prepared by reacting p-chloraniline and a , a -methyl-valeryl chloride. Many other compounds which can be made by analagous methods are given.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise as active ingredient an anilide of a general formula <FORM:0971819/A5-A6/1> in which X and Y each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or the methyl, nitro, methoxy or ethoxy group and R represents an alkyl radical together with a solid or non-solvent liquid carrier. Other pesticides and fertilizers may also be incorporated. Many active ingredients and carriers are specified.
