A support device comprises a suspension member 35, a load carrying unit 46 located axially of the member 35, a connector 22 effecting connection between the member 35 and unit 46 and having threaded engagement with the member 35, driving means, e.g. a motor 42, for causing relative rotation of the member 35 and the connector to effect axial displacement of the load-carrying unit relative to the member 35, and means 47 responsive to variation in conditions of a load when secured to the device and operable to actuate the driving means. The suspension member is adapted to be secured to a structure 41 and includes a first part 40 for attachment to the structure and a second part 35 angularly movable about a horizontal axis when the first part is attached to the structure, the second part being connected to the connector. As shown, a housing 5 carries coaxial, rotatable guide wheels 15 which register in slots 13 in a cover 10 secured to the rod 35 the latter being engaged in the upper member 25 of a unit 22 having a gear 28 in mesh with a gear 45 attached to the shaft 44 of a combined reversible electric motor and reducing gear unit 42. A shaft 30 extends through the lower member 23 of the unit 22 and is secured to the bottom wall 6 of the housing; thrust and sleeve bearings 20, 21 are provided between the member 23 and a support 16, and a thrust bearing 33 is positioned between the head 31 of the shaft 30 and the member 23. A mechanism 47 responsive to the variations in condition of the load on the support closes and opens a switch to operate the motor which causes rotation of the unit 22 to raise and lower the support and thereby compensate for change in the load.
