971,571. Piezo-electric resonators. TELEFUNKEN PATENT-VERWERTUNGSG.m.b.H. Aug. 3, 1962 [Aug. 10, 1961], No. 29850/62. Heading H1E. The resonant frequency of a piezoelectric e.g. quartz, resonator is adjusted by evaporating metal from or on to an electrode, the evaporation being effected by means of radiant energy. The method is applied to an electroded resonator 3 already mounted within an hermetically sealed enclosure 6. Heat is applied either to an electrode or to a piece of foil 5 made of the same metal, e.g. silver, platinum, as the electrode. Energy from an external source, e.g. a glow discharge lamp 7, is concentrated on to the required spot by e.g. an optical system 8, 9. The lamp may be pulsed to give an output of 60-100 watt-secs. per flash. A circuit for automatically performing the adjustment comprises an oscillator 11 controlled by the resonator 3 and a standard-frequency oscillator 12. The outputs of the oscillators are compared by a device 13 which switches off the pulse generator 10 when the frequency difference reaches zero or some other fixed value. An electron beam may be used instead of visible radiation.
